New release: Running Up That Hill by Candy Says & Marc Canham
We are pretty darned excited to be releasing Candy Says’ intense electro-pop version of Running Up That Hill, recorded for the opening credits of the new Netflix film Close, directed by Vicky Jewson and starring the unbelievably talented Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
In the film, Noomi plays a kickass bodyguard who is assigned to protect a bratty billionaire teen, and the pair get up to all sorts of action-packed shenanigans. We watched the final version of the film at a Netflix screening in Mayfair (lah-de-daaaah!) on Wednesday, and it is stunning. Not only is Noomi the coolest and most believable female action lead since Sigourney Weaver in Alien (or maybe even Aliens – controversial), but the relationship between the two lead characters is complex, emotional and really rather moving. It’s an independent film made by real people that is launching on Netflix today (Friday 18 Jan) and might well be seen by millions of people. Maybe there is some justice in the world after all.
The director wanted a new version of the Kate Bush track that captured the intensity and emotion of the main character. Candy Says collaborated with the film’s composer Marc Canham to create an epic cinematic track that shares some sonic elements with the film’s brutal score but also gives the audience a taste of the intense emotions that await. Once it was finished, the recording had to be approved by Kate Bush herself, which meant a few nail-biting days before she gave it the double thumbs up. Juju talked more about the process in an interview with the Oxford Times. Candy Says also wrote and recorded another song for the end credits – you’ll have to watch the film to hear that one…
Running Up That Hill is OUT NOW on Bandcamp, Spotify and all the usual streaming places. Go listen, and watch Close – it’s brilliant!
